Chapter Six
"Well looky who the little vampire dragged in," the bartender said when Stephen and Rhys sat at the bar. "I heard about your mating." The guy turned to Stephen and winked. "You should've gone with bear. We're better lovers."
Stephen knew who the bartender was. He also knew that Darius was the biggest manwhore in the South. The guy probably had so many notches on his bedpost that it looked termite-infested.
He couldn't deny that Darius was gorgeous, but he liked his wolf just fine. They were mates—a term Stephen was still trying to understand. All he knew was that he belonged to Rhys and that pleased Stephen to no end.
"Keep talking out the side of your neck and your pa will have one less son." Rhys slapped his hand on the bar. "Now get me some fucking grub. I'm starving."
"I think I'll stick with Rhys," Stephen said. His stomach grumbled at the savory smells in the tavern. That was what Stephen hated the most about becoming a vampire. He'd been a foodie, and now he was stuck with one thing to quench his appetite for the rest of his life.
"I'll grab you some fried chicken and fries." Darius winked at Stephen again before walking away.
He turned to Rhys. "How long do vampires live?"
"For as long as there is a food supply," someone said behind Stephen.
Stephen slowly turned and stared at the man standing there. Rhys growled as he stood. "You talked with Matt. You know the deal, Lucian. Stephen is mine."
Stephen couldn't stop staring at Lucian. His voice had been smooth, dark, and flowed like warm honey. He was also tall and slim, and silky dark hair fell down his back. Whereas Rhys was gorgeous with a savage aura, Lucian seemed more worldly and sophisticated, but deadly.
Stephen felt a strange link to the guy, even though he didn't know him.
"Do you have any questions for me, youngling?" Lucian asked Stephen. "I would be more than willing to answer them."
Stephen looked over at Rhys. He stood there glaring daggers at Lucian but didn't say a word. As much as Stephen loved that Rhys was there for him, willing to protect him, Rhys hadn't a clue about what being a vampire was like.
"Can I ask him a few things?" Stephen asked Rhys.
Rhys's upper lip curled. "Just as long as you do it right here at the bar."
Lucian looked around, as though he found the tavern distasteful. "Very well."
Rhys simply stood there, like he was ready to tackle Lucian if the guy tried to steal Stephen away. He adored Rhys for acting this way, but Stephen had some burning questions he wanted to ask.
And he could only assume Lucian was a vampire because…well…not only did he seem knowledgable, but he looked the part, too.
He turned to Lucian. "Why does bagged blood taste like crap?"
The side of Lucian's mouth curled upward, making him look even more dashing. "Because it isn't from the source."
"Meaning a vein."
Lucian gave a single nod. "We are powerful creatures, youngling.
